I. Characteristics of SS2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Material


1. Dual-phase structure and mechanical properties The core advantage of SS2205 ball valves lies in its dual-phase stainless steel material. This material consists of approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite, combining the toughness of austenitic stainless steel with the high strength of ferritic stainless steel. From the chemical composition perspective, the ratio of SS2205 is designed with a chromium (Cr) content controlled at 22.0% - 23.0%, molybdenum (Mo) at 3.0% - 3.5%, nickel (Ni) at 4.5% - 6.5%, and 0.08% - 0.20% nitrogen (N). This composition system enables a point corrosion equivalent (PREN) of over 35, significantly higher than 25 of 316L.

In terms of mechanical properties, the yield strength of SS2205 exceeds 450 MPa, which is more than 2.5 times that of 316L stainless steel (approximately 170 MPa). This means that when manufacturing ball valves with SS2205, the wall thickness of the valve body can be reduced by 20% - 30%, achieving lightweight design while ensuring pressure-bearing capacity. The applicable temperature range of SS2205 ball valves is typically -50°C to 250°C, and specially designed low-temperature types can extend to -196°C.


Corrosion resistance properties


The outstanding characteristic of SS2205 is its resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In marine environments or chemical media containing chloride ions, ordinary 304 or 316L austenitic stainless steel is prone to stress corrosion cracking, while SS2205's dual-phase structure gives it natural immunity to SCC. Additionally, the high chromium and high aluminum content endows SS2205 with excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, performing exceptionally well in corrosive media such as seawater, acidic gases (H2S, CO2), etc.


Application


The SS2205 ball valve is widely used in various demanding industrial fields due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength.

5.1 Marine Engineering and Seawater Desalination

The high concentration of chloride ions in seawater is extremely corrosive to ordinary stainless steel, but the anti-stain corrosion property of the SS2205 ball valve makes it the best choice for seawater desalination, offshore platforms, and ship systems. In reverse osmosis (SWRO) seawater desalination systems, the SS2205 is used in the high-pressure pump outlet pipelines and energy recovery systems, with a service life far exceeding that of 316L. 5.2 Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry

In acidic oil and gas fields containing H2S and CO2, the SS2205 ball valve complies with the NACE MR0175 standard requirements and is suitable for offshore platforms, LNG receiving stations, and sulfur-containing oil and gas transportation pipelines. Its high strength allows the valve to maintain structural integrity under high pressure while resisting corrosion from acidic media.

5.3 Chemicals and Papermaking In the chlor-alkali industry, PTA plants, and sulfuric acid recovery systems, the SS2205 ball valve exhibits excellent resistance to acid and alkali corrosion. The bleaching section (containing CIO2) and the cooking equipment in the paper industry are also typical application scenarios.

5.4 Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) Power plant flue gas desulfurization systems are faced with harsh environments of low pH values, high chloride ions, and abrasive particles. The SS2205 ball valve is used in slurry circulation pipelines, oxidizing air systems, and absorption tower spray layers, and its resistance to crevice corrosion and wear ensures long-term stable operation.


Packing of Standard Packing: 


Typical bulk packaging includes palletized plastic 5 gallon/25 kg. pails, fiber and steel drums to 1 ton super sacks in full container (FCL) or truck load (T/L) quantities. Research and sample quantities and hygroscopic, oxidizing or other air sensitive materials may be packaged under argon or vacuum. Solutions are packaged in polypropylene, plastic or glass jars up to palletized 470 gallon liquid totes Special package is available on request.
