Titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to most salt solutions. For instance, titanium is more resistant to corrosion in chloride solutions than high chromium-nickel steel, and there is no pitting corrosion. Titanium also has good stability against sodium hypochlorite at high temperatures and various concentrations of hypochlorites.
Titanium alloy flanged ball valves are widely used in the industries of vacuum salt production and bleaching powder. Titanium has excellent corrosion resistance to most alkaline solutions. Titanium is relatively stable in solutions with a concentration of less than 50% and potassium hydroxide. If the alkaline solution contains chloride ions or chlorides, its corrosion resistance even exceeds that of nickel and zirconium.
Titanium is not resistant to corrosion in dry chlorine gas and is also prone to fire. However, it is highly stable in humid chlorine gas, surpassing zirconium, Hastelloy C and Monel alloys. It is also stable in saturated chlorine-based media such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and chloride solutions.
